Each of us deserves a second chance.
Adopting a rescue horse or Mustang is one of the best things you can do.
When you adopt, you’re not just giving a deserving horse a home. You’re also demonstrating that a love for the horse is about so much more than putting profit before animal welfare: that each of us is an individual,
with the potential to do incredible things.
Meet Our Horses, Past and Present

Little Chief
Chief got his name for a reason — he is the boss. Little Chief was born on the Virginia Range in Nevada. Still wild at heart, Little Chief is incredibly smart and often tries to outsmart his people. Once he knows that you are his human, he will give you 110%. We adopted Chief in 2018 along with his brother, Bodhi. Chief eventually proved to be an amazing endurance horse, excelling at 50-mile rides with energy to spare! He has so much heart and is worth every second of time we have spent earning his trust and respect. Chief is currently enjoying a respite from his high-intensity endurance career, turned out on 300 acres of pasture with his brother Bodhi.

Bodhi
Wickedly smart, eccentric, and a bit dramatic, Bodhi is the theatre kid of our herd. Bo is a Mustang off the Virginia Range in Nevada. We adopted Bodhi in 2018 along with his brother Little Chief. As Bo and Chief spent the first 5-6 years of their life in the wild, both required lots of time and understanding through their transition into domestic life. Bodhi now excels in the jumper divisions at hunter/jumper shows and will be making his debut in the .90-meter divisions soon! Bodhi is also an amazing mountain horse and loves going on long trail-rides and pack trips. Bodhi is currently living his best life with his brother Little Chief, turned out on 300 acres of pasture just 30 minutes away from our main location in South Fork, CO.

Vincent
Vincent is by far the goofiest, sweetest member of our herd — he’s pretty certain that he is just a big dog. Vince’s favorite activities are spa days, cuddling in the sunshine, and eating. He is always the first horse at the gate and never turns down a hug. Vincent is a Mustang from the Triple B HMA in Nevada. We adopted him in 2022 as a 2-year-old and he is now a stunning 5-year-old. Vincent is an absolutely stunning mover with 3 beautiful gaits and is starting to work on some fancier tricks, like his flying change and lateral work. Vincent is an exceptional dressage prospect and we are hoping to get him out to some competitions in 2026.

Lady
Lady, aka Ladybug, has one of the most incredible success stories. We found out about her from a kill pen’s Facebook page, and knew that we had to rescue this beautiful Mustang. We picked her up on the same day that her truck was supposed to ship to Mexico. She was very scared and underweight when we first began working with her, but within 6 months she became one of the sweetest and safest Mustangs we’ve ever known — her new human is a 10-year-old boy, who she loves. She currently lives with her wonderful new family in Moab, UT.

Wynston
Wynston is a stunning five-year-old Arabian gelding. Wynston was part of a large herd-dump at a kill-pen in TX, where Second Chance Ranch also found Cora. Wynston was shockingly calm and trusting from day one, despite everything he had gone through in his young life. We learned after rescuing him that he actually came from a long lineage of Arabian champions. After a battle with strangles, gaining around 100 pounds, and getting started under saddle, we found Wynston the most amazing home in Crestone, CO. Wynston helps teach young children about horses and loves his job. Wyn’s mama loves taking him out on the trail and treating him like the prince he is.

Cora
Cora is a beautiful twelve-year-old Arabian mare who Second Chance Ranch purchased from a kill-pen in TX in 2023, thanks to the generous donations from our village of rescue warriors. Cora was emaciated and covered in wounds when we first brought her to our facility. She gained around 200 pounds and her battle wounds healed. Cora was always incredibly sweet and didn’t have a mean bone in her body, but was very fearful of humans when she first arrived. We slowly built confidence and trust and after almost a year with us, Cora completed her first 25 mile endurance ride with flying colors. We found Cora the most amazing human mama in Colorado who provides her with the life of a queen. We can’t wait to see them conquer their first endurance ride next year.
-

Relic
Relic is a stunning 5-year-old blue roan whose owners rescued him and 9 other babies from a low-end auction several years ago. Relic’s loving humans sent him to Second Chance Ranch for him to be started under saddle so that he can find a permanent home in the near future. Relic is extremely sweet on the ground — he is wonderful for the vet and farrier, loads into the trailer like a champ, and loves his “spa days.” Relic is just about ready for his first ride after a month of groundwork — he will be ready for adoption once he’s had 60 days under saddle to an approved home. Reach out if you’d like to learn more about this special boy.
-
Margaret
Margaret is a stunning, intelligent, athletic Arabian mare who was sent to Second Chance Ranch for behavioral rehabilitation and rehoming by some wonderful horse-people who had rescued her from a horrific situation. Sadly, she had been treated very poorly by her former owners and lost trust in humans. We spent two months teaching Margaret to form new associations with humans and then started her under saddle. After successfully completing her first 25-mile endurance ride, Margaret went home with the most perfect new mama. Her name is now ‘Pearl’, and we can’t wait to see them both at endurance rides in the future.

Pip
Second Chance Ranch adopted Pip in October 2024 along with her “sister,” Calliope. Pip is a 6-year-old Mustang from the Piceance/East Douglas HMA. After a year of training, Pip became the most wonderful trail partner and sweetest girl on the ground. Pip has been adopted by a beautiful family that hopes she can be a great mount for kiddos in the coming years. With Pip’s sweet disposition and eagerness to learn, the sky is the limit for the pint-sized powerhouse!

Calliope
Calliope is a 6-year-old Mustang from the Piceance/East Douglas HMA in Colorado that SCR adopted in October 2024. In the beginning of her gentling journey, Calliope was very wary about humans and would rather pretend that we didn’t exist than to make eye contact. Callie is now one of the most outgoing horses we have and loves being loved. After a year with us, Callie is fully gentled and is almost ready to be started under saddle. Callie will be available for adoption once she is a confident riding partner. We envision her being the mountain horse supreme as she is a big, strong girl and loves being out on the trail.
-

Bounce
Bounce is an adorable 20-something AQHA girl whose loving owner sadly needed to rehome due to a living situation change. Second Chance Ranch was honored to take this girl in as an interim resident until we found her the perfect new human. She now lives just 30 minutes away from us and is thriving in her new situation, where she has plenty of grass, friends, and kiddos to tote around for pony rides.
-

Abigail
Abigail is a beautiful, 10-year-old Arabian mare who was relinquished to SCR by her owners in 2023. After giving Abigail a solid start under saddle and her successful completion of her first 25 mile endurance ride in 2024, we found Abigail a beautiful home in Montana with a human mom who had always dreamed of adopting a papered Arabian. Abigail is now a treasured member of her family and wants for nothing. We hope to see Abbie and her mama out at endurance rides in the Mountain Region!

Faith
Faith is Relic’s “sister” — she is a beautiful 5-year-old grade quarter horse mare with all of the potential in the world. Faith’s humans saved her and Relic from a very uncertain end by saving them from a low-end auction in KS as babies. Faith has breezed through her first month with us and is an extremely smart, sweet, trainable girl. Faith has had her first 10 rides with us and hasn’t offered anything other than a willingness to please. She has the potential to move in any direction — reining, cow work, ranch versatility, you name it. If you’re looking for a young, versatile partner — Faith’s your girl! Reach out to us for more information and to apply to adopt this very special lady.
